Context
This project was born as a request from Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia. During the Covid-19 Pandemic, the university had to close, but they still wanted to give the students a community feeling. That is why, among others, they decided to widen their cultural offer and to provide new online content that was different and interesting. Because it was part of the academic and cultura offer, they wanted the content to stand in the intersection between entertainment and academy. That was how _rayalpiso was born.
The project
We created a series of 8 YouTube videos as the first season. The topic we chose was the Internet, because we wanted to talk about something that was part of this generation’s daily lives and “meta” topics are big within Generation Z. What better than talking about the Internet while using all of its tools? Thus, we chose to do provocative video essays where we discussed some phenomena that were born or changed thanks to the internet. We wrote the scripts, recorded, and produced the videos that, among others, had the following topics: memes, lo-fi hip hop, food videos, the otaku community, gamers, and political discussions.
Takeaways
Throughout this project, we learned not only about video producing and editing, but also about all the time, effort and resources that it takes to make one good video. It is not only about finding interesting topics and writing a good script, but using a good camera with enough lighting, finding supporting images, videos and sounds, learning to talk to a camera, and working with a good video editor that can understand the requirements and needs of the project. This was definitely very challenging for us, but it was also fulfilling, and we hope to be able to work again in something like this.
